Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP
McLean, Virginia

Pillsbury is a leading international law firm with 21 offices around the world and a particular focus on the energy & natural resources, financial services, real estate & construction, technology, and travel & hospitality sectors. Recognized by Financial Times as one of the most innovative law firms, Pillsbury and its lawyers are highly regarded for their forward-thinking approach, their enthusiasm for collaborating across disciplines and their unsurpassed commercial awareness.
Pillsbury is one of the largest law firms in Northern Virginia. Just minutes from Washington, DC, Pillsbury’s McLean office offers the depth, resources and intellectual challenges of a big city practice with the lifestyle advantages of a major suburban area. From this premier “Silicon Valley of the East” location, the Northern Virginia office is integrally involved with and connected to the legal, business, technology and government contracting communities locally and around the world.
Chambers USA ranked our Northern Virginia office as a top provider of intellectual property, real estate, and corporate and securities legal services. Other active practices in our Northern Virginia office include government contracts and disputes, executive compensation and benefits, tax and global sourcing. Our Northern Virginia office is also highly committed to community service and pro bono activities.
Our core practice areas are:
Intellectual Property
Our office houses leading IP litigation and patent prosecution practices, and serves as the hub of our strategic IP counseling. We are located near the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the International Trade Commission, the Patent & Trademark Appeals Board and one of the nation’s busiest “rocket” dockets, the Eastern District of Virginia. As a leader in cutting-edge areas of IP, one of the firm’s Northern Virginia practitioners recently authored the first edition of the authoritative PTAB Handbook published by Bloomberg BNA in 2016, and serves as lead editor of the Patent Litigation Strategies Handbook, also released by Bloomberg BNA this year. Among notable matters, we recently successfully protected Medtronic’s patents for its lifesaving innovations before the Patent & Trademark Appeals Board.

Emerging Growth & Technology
Pillsbury’s Northern Virginia office focuses on emerging growth, venture capital, technology and life sciences clients, providing startups and emerging companies with legal services for all stages, from inception to IPO and beyond.

Real Estate
Our real estate lawyers are part of the preeminent real estate practice in Northern Virginia and are routinely involved in dynamic, sophisticated and challenging transactions both in the region and around the country. Recent transactions include negotiation of retail leases throughout the country, advising a European company on U.S. investments and legal work for major infrastructure projects including toll roads and bridges, as well as public-private partnerships such as a $2 billion wharf development in Washington, DC.

Government Contracts & Disputes
We represent a broad array of clients, primarily in the aerospace, IT and energy sectors, on diverse issues at the federal, state and local levels. Our nationwide practice deploys highly experienced attorneys from DC and the West Coast to handle bid protests, litigate claims and conduct internal investigations. We also advise on matters ranging from data rights to security clearances, from mergers to ethics compliance and from small-business issues to international contracting. In 2016, Law360 recognized the team as a “Government Contracts Group of the Year.”

Among notable matters, our lawyers have gained national recognition in 20 cases in which our nuclear utilities clients have established that the Department of Energy breached their contracts by failing to take and dispose of spent nuclear fuel stored at plants. These lawsuits seek aggregate damages in excess of $1 billion.
